Downstate Professor Elected President of the American Psychiatric Association

Congratulations to Ramaswamy Viswanathan, M.D., DrMedSc, professor and interim chair, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, on
his recent election as President-Elect of the American Psychiatric Association (APA).
Dr. Viswanathan鈥檚 term as president-elect begins in May 2023; he assumes the role
of APA president from May 2024 through May 2025.
Dr. Viswanathan is the first person from Brooklyn in Downstate鈥檚 history to be elected to this position; he is also the third person of color to be elected president since the organization鈥檚 inception in 1844鈥�178 years ago!
APA is the world鈥檚 largest psychiatric association and has more than 37,000 members, and is the main body of psychiatry in the United States.
